Research. Mainline or not.

Category: By AG
Recent examples of Reiser4, and RSDL/SD make it difficult to convince someone that they should work in an area to contribute towards Linux kernel and it will be appreciated. Work, IMHO, should be done for the sake of research and not with a goal of getting it included into mainline / upstream. If someone appreciates it or not really depends on whom you ask. Getting the work included in the mainline is no indication that it is of no importance, it just depicts that enterprise world is not benefiting much from that piece of code.

Hmm.. its easier said, than done. When you have put hours into a project, you would like it to be used finally or to make some sort of difference. Its only upto a point that we do things to satisfy our curiosity. Why put so much effort into something which is not going to affect anyone ??

I have been reading thru all that for the last few days. Not a good sign.

it just depicts that enterprise world is..
so you agree that whatever goes under the hood is "enterprise" and not for the desktop.

vivekian: Acceptance in the mainline doesn't mean anyway that it is widely accepted, but ya its on the verge of wide acceptance - both does not mean the same.

Parag, yes its been disappointing, and as far as the Linux kernel goes desktop users do not get as much attention as much as the corporate needs. But yes, like you know, outside the kernel lot and many things are contributed to spur Linux on desktop. And guess what, the largest laptop manufacturer is today shipping laptops with Linux pre-installed :) BTW, how often do you dual boot to Windows on your laptop? Given you still have Windows around ;)

Yeah, Dell is doing it, Acer too.
And yes, I dual boot to Windows, a lot. Ubuntu happens to be the only distro that does all that I need these days, but its i386 optimized and not snappy enough like i686 distros. That irks me. And then there are 3 more reasons, audio chat, video chat & web divx. I have been trying to single boot since ages, has yet to happen...

For audio chat I use skype and for divx theres mplayer and totem plugin that allows you to play divx. And if you already have mplayer or totem plugin for firefox you should be able to play divx from your browser.

Something to say?
